What New Visitors Usually Miss
- USJ runs a lot of limited-time intellectual property — anime and seasonal collaborations that appear and vanish. Several attractions in the park's lineup at any moment are temporary.
- Crowd density is the defining feature. Weekends, Golden Week in May and mid-July through August are extremely busy.
- Most signage and show audio is Japanese. Ride mechanics translate; comedy and narration largely do not.
First Visit Game Plan
If you only read one section before showing up, make it this one.
Tip 1
Super Nintendo World has used timed entry, area tickets or virtual queues depending on the day. Check the current requirement in the official app before you arrive — this trips up more visitors than anything else here.
Tip 2
Donkey Kong Country opened on 11 December 2024, expanding Super Nintendo World by around 70%. Mine-Cart Madness is its headliner.
Tip 3
Express Passes are expensive but genuinely change the day here. If you are only visiting once, price one seriously.
Must-Do Experiences
The experiences most likely to define whether a first visit feels worth it.
Tip 1
Ride Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge, the original version of the attraction, using augmented-reality visors.
Tip 2
Ride Mine-Cart Madness in Donkey Kong Country, where the cars appear to jump gaps in broken track.
Tip 3
Ride The Flying Dinosaur, a prone-position coaster that is one of the best thrill rides in Asia.
Tickets And Logistics
The planning details that usually create the biggest first-timer mistakes.
Ticket Strategy
- From 1 September 2026 Studio Pass pricing starts at ¥8,400, with peak dates reaching around ¥11,900 and typical off-peak dates in the ¥8,900 to ¥9,900 range.
- Peak periods are late February through March, Golden Week in May, and mid-July to the end of August.
- Express Passes sell out ahead of time on busy dates and are a separate purchase from the Studio Pass.
Getting There And Arrival
- From JR Osaka Station take the Osaka Loop Line to Nishikujo, then the JR Yumesaki Line to Universal City Station — about 15 minutes total. The gates are a five-minute walk from the station.
- Direct trains from Osaka Station to Universal City run at some times of day, avoiding the Nishikujo change.
- The park is in Konohana Ward on Osaka Bay, well connected to Kansai International Airport by rail with a change.
Food And Comfort
The unglamorous details that make the difference between a smooth day and a rough one.
Food Tips
- Themed food is taken seriously here, particularly in Super Nintendo World, and portions are designed for Japanese appetites rather than American ones.
- Restaurant reservations for the Nintendo area restaurants are worth arranging in advance on busy dates.
- Seasonal and collaboration-specific menu items are a real part of the appeal and rotate frequently.
Weather And Packing
- Osaka summers are hot and humid, and much of the park is exposed asphalt with limited shade.
- The June rainy season means sustained rain; an umbrella serves better than a poncho.
- Typhoons can affect operations between roughly July and October.

Park History
Universal Studios Japan opened on March 31, 2001 in Osaka's Konohana Ward, the first Universal park outside the United States, and quickly became one of the highest-attendance parks in the world.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in 2014 and transformed the park's fortunes, followed by Super Nintendo World in March 2021 — the first Nintendo land anywhere, developed with Nintendo and using wearable Power-Up Bands to turn the land itself into a game.
Donkey Kong Country opened on December 11, 2024, expanding Super Nintendo World by roughly 70% and adding Mine-Cart Madness, a coaster engineered so its cars appear to leap across missing sections of track.
Fun Facts & FAQs
Was Super Nintendo World here first?
Yes. It opened at Universal Studios Japan in March 2021, before the Hollywood and Epic Universe versions. Osaka is the original.
Do I need a separate ticket for Super Nintendo World?
Often, yes. Access has been managed by timed entry, area tickets or a virtual queue depending on demand. Check the official app for the current system on your date.
What is a Power-Up Band?

Is there a Wizarding World here?
